About Our Club

Tokonkai Karate has its roots in Shotokan karate; one of the most popular karate styles in the United Kingdom. However, unlike a lot of Shotokan Clubs we place our emphasis on the importance of effective self-defence, rather than sport.

Karate-do translates as "The Way of the Empty Hand", and Tokonkai translates as "Fighting Spirit Club". We expect all our black belt students to show fighting spirit within their life, rather than just giving up when the going gets hard.

The founders of Tokonkai Karate-do are Dave Floyd (3rd dan) and Angela Giesens (2nd dan), who teach in the two Devon dojo, but also regularly visit the Bracknell dojo. Our Bracknell dojo is mainly run by Andy Marriott (1st dan).

Tokonkai Karate-do is a member of Traditional Karate Great Britain, a non profit making body created for traditional karate practitioners in the UK.
